Shannon Garst (1894-1981)

American author of novels and non-fiction, mainly biographies. Full name Doris Shannon Garst.  Born in Ironwood, Michigan in either 1894. She became a teacher but after her first book was published turned to writing full time. For her pen name she dropped the 'Doris' as she didn't think anyone would accept a Western-themed book written by a woman! She was in fact to write many more books with such a theme, her many biographies of well-known American figures often featured 'Western' characters such as Annie Oakley, Wild Bill Hickok and Buffalo Bill. Her fictional stories too were often of a Western slant, and several included that stalwart of Western literature, the horse.
